The Surprisingly Fun Benefits of Coloring (Yes, Even for Adults!)

Picture it. The 90’s. I am sitting cross-legged on the carpet, coloring books scattered around me, each one filled with my favorite characters. Beside me sits a bright box of 64 Crayola crayons, their tips still perfect and full of possibility. I did not know it then, but those afternoons were more than just play. They were quiet lessons in calm.

Years have passed and life moves faster now. My days are full, my responsibilities many. Somewhere along the way, I picked up my coloring pencils again and found something I did not realize I had been missing. Focus. Stillness. A gentle kind of peace.

Coloring has quietly returned to the world of grownups, not as a childish pastime but as an art of slowing down. It is not about perfect lines or flawless blending. It is about giving yourself space to breathe and letting colors lead you back to joy.

Here is why coloring may be the most nourishing thing you do for yourself this week.

Give Your Mind a Break

Adulthood rarely offers the gift of pause. My mind often races ahead, chasing the next task before finishing the one in front of me. Coloring offers a rare invitation to stop. It becomes a small retreat for the brain, a moment when thoughts soften and the mind rests in the simple rhythm of color filling a page.

 Let the Stress Fade Away

When I began teaching, I was an introvert in a world that seemed to thrive on constant conversation and high energy. I often carried my stress like a second skin. Returning to coloring was like finding a door to a quiet place I had forgotten existed. Science tells us that it can lower cortisol and bring calm, but the real magic is in how it feels to lay color down one gentle stroke at a time.

 A Spark of Creative Confidence

Coloring asks for no perfection. You can make the sky magenta, the grass golden, the ocean a swirl of teal and lavender. The beauty is in the freedom to choose, to experiment, to create without fear of doing it wrong.

A Gentle Path to Sleep

Though I have not yet tried coloring before bed, I imagine it easily. The warm glow of a lamp. A soft hum of quiet around me. The slow dance of color across paper easing my mind into stillness. It is the opposite of scrolling, an invitation for the body to rest and the mind to drift.

The Quiet Joy of Completion

There is a certain pleasure in watching a page transform beneath your hands. The once empty spaces begin to bloom with color, and something inside you feels just as full. It is a small act, yet it carries a surprising sense of accomplishment.

 Meditation in Disguise

Coloring keeps you in the moment without asking for effort. You are not counting breaths or repeating phrases. You are simply here, in the movement of your hand and the deepening of the shade, present in a way that feels both natural and grounding. Check out our Mindful Moments Coloring Journal

 A Shared, Wordless Connection

Some of the sweetest moments are those spent coloring beside my child. No words are needed. There is only the quiet presence of being together, the soft sound of pencils, the simple comfort of shared space.

Color Your Way

There is no right way to color. Stay inside the lines if you wish, or let your strokes wander freely. Choose the colors you love, even if they make no sense. What matters is the stillness you find, the joy you create, and the peace you carry with you long after the page is done.
